Budget Tool and Seating Chart
I'm not on board with the new budget tool/checklist/vendor list. The layout is very confusing, particularly with the budget tool. I wish there were a way to input the actual amount spent, and if it it less than recommended, the extra money not spent could be redistributed to a different category(ies) of my choice. I also use WeddingWire, and I really like their budget tool because it is set up that way, but I'm not crazy about the layout of their wedding websites/guest list manager. Perhaps I would only need to use The Knot if the budget tool were more useful in a real life sense. I think couples generally will categorize their personal priorities for their budgets; allowing the budget amounts to be reallocated to their liking would make it much more usable in a practical way.
On a side note, I think a seating chart feature would be super helpful. I do not want to get a posterboard and move pins around when working my seating chart. It would be much each easier if a feature could be added so users can create a mock-up of their reception space and move tables/guest seats, similarly to WeddingWire's seating chart feature.
I really appreciate you taking time to send over this review of our budgeting product and the checklist in general. We are still working on updating this part of our site so that it is something all couples feel they can use and it will be in a format that makes sense and is helpful. I have already sent your feedback along to our Product Design team for them to look at this and make sure they take it into consideration as we move forward. We hope that you are able to find The Knot is a great tool for your planning needs and that we continue to add things that will enhance the process for you.
In order for the Budgeter to be useful I need to be able to:
- modify/change the title of a budget item
- add new budget items
- access the budget items that I have archived
A seating chart tool would be helpful! to have it linked to the guest list manager as well, would be even better! that way we can organize the list into tables, as well as households.
Definitely love your site, but the budget tool is not actually helpful. I see others have asked that the amounts update and reallocate based on the things you've put actual amounts in for. This is super important when you find a great deal and want to see how everything else changes because of it. Example - our ceremony and reception are in the same place. Our venue is far below the reception recommendation that we ended up with but more than the ceremony site recommendation so I listed the cost under reception and marked the ceremony site as being free ($0). It would be so wonderful to see the other numbers adjust to the "extra" money that we have based on those savings. Thanks!!!

I immediately turned to The Knot for all my wedding planning! It has been so helpful up until this point. Now that I am in the 5 month stretch, it is time to plan the seating chart... but to my surprise, there is no seat chart planner on the site! Even sites like Wedding Wire have seating chart apps.
There should be a seating chart option that allows us to use our Guest List to fill it in for easy, simplified planning!
Now I have to either join Wedding Wire or make my own post board. :(
I completely agree with this. It's not disliking change for the sake of change, it's that this new version has quite literally no rhyme or reason. If you had BOTH tools, one where while you were doing the check list you could write in your amounts AND the old tool that itemized each item and totaled everything for you while also giving you the estimated spend, that would work a MILLION times better. That's really disappointing that people are giving you feedback and you're basically just saying, yeah well we like it like this better. We're the customer. You're not even using the website. This is one of the biggest expenses of our lives and you're being pretty cavalier about it.
I agree with Hannah 100%. Sorry to be harsh but your "budgeter" update is awful. It messed up everything we had saved, makes it more difficult to edit items, and worst of all I don't have the confidence that I can get a correct total budget (estimated items + confirmed items). It isn't even consistent across the app and browser platform with the same account, we have a $1465 difference... um. what?
I don't know what your product team was going for here, but budgets and check lists - humans kinda figured those out 1000s of years ago. Not a good opportunity to reinvent the wheel. I'm picturing a product manager thinking way too far out of the box here.
If I sound frustrated, it's because we already spent good number of hours on this over the past months and now we have reverted to converting everything into an excel spreadsheet.
I really dislike the new wedding budgeter. I'm sure there's value to having it somehow tied to the checklist, but it's much more confusing as it is now. I'd strongly prefer it revert back to how it was before. Or maybe you could have the option to view it one way or the other. In the new version, it's very difficult to see, at a glance, what you're spending per topic (example, ceremony as a whole, music as a whole, etc). I also preferred to see the recommended prices and the actual money spent side by side. Really, the old version just felt way more user friendly. I really liked it. Now, in the current form, I feel like I need to use another site or come up with my own version. .
If you could add back a seating chart, that'd be great. I'm switching to WeddingWire if you don't add it before I send out invitations because I might as well do everything in one place if you aren't going to let me do it here.
Totally agree. I was about to post something similar when I saw this post. I do not care for having to click on each line item to view and its so hard to see everything at once. There are more spending mistakes likely to be made.:-(
I completely agree!
it used to be awesome...gave me a general idea of what i should be spending and kept me on track...i never saved the dollar amounts thinking that this tool will be available. Now it only helps me keep track of what I've already spent. I can do that on word. Will be switching to WeddingWire full time.
I cannot stand the new budgeter page where they have now "married" your checklist, to-do and budgeting.
I can no longer see all the allocated expense items on one page, but instead have to click on each item individually to enter 1) what I have spent and 2) what is allocated.
I am VERY concerned that this update is going to cause me to make mistakes/overspend in the wrong places... and the confusion alone I am dealing with right now is adding to my stress.
PLEASE when you do something like this, leave an option for members to revert to the old page that they are used to!! (nothing against people who like it being able to use it)... I cannot imagine that I am the only Bride feeling this way
OH MY GOD I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU! I just send an email to customer service. You can only see one item at a time, after clicking on it!! I cant see what amounts are allocated per item, and this new thing is going to make me over spend or miss something
The new Budgeter is horrible. I can't even see what I've spent in an easily readable form anymore. I've had to find a spreadsheet to download to do what I was doing on The Knot. If you feel like you still need to have the new Budgeter, please at least have an option to click and view it the old way as well.
While the Budgeter tool was helpful allocating over very broad categories, I felt it was not useful when actually budgeting. It would be helpful if the budgeter was interactive, where you could remove or add categories and underlying category items. It would also be nice if instead of a fixed budget number it could be a suggested figure that the user could modify. For example I know I'm willing to spend more on flowers and zero on transportation, I'd like to be able to remove transportation from my budget.
I love the Budgeter but two things:
1) I had to create my own excel spreadsheet based on the Budgeter because some items I was overbudget and other items I was underbudget - so I need to calculate how much in total I was over/under.
2) I think it would be great if you could find local vendors based on the budget. For example, my photographer budget is around $2K so I think it would be great if we could click on Photographers and it would take us to photographers that are within $2K budget.
